Couples Therapy
How Does Couples Therapy Work?
All couples struggle at some point in time and sometimes an impasse is reached. When this happens, an objective third party such as a therapist, can be helpful. A therapist can educate both partners on the tenets of healthy communication, conflict resolution, and the importance of physical and emotional intimacy. Help is available at Solid Foundation Psychiatry. Give us a call to schedule an appointment with one of our therapists.
Couples Therapy versus Marriage Therapy
Couples therapy is not the same as marriage therapy because the status of the relationship itself is different as are the dynamics of the relationships.
In couples therapy there is a focus on addressing all aspects of the couples life together. Issues such as conflicts within the relationship, increasing satisfaction and intimacy within the romantic relationship, and to improving communication. It involves both partners taking an active role in the therapeutic process and is led by a licensed therapist with expertise and training in the complicated dynamics of relationships.
Marriage therapy focuses on helping married couples work through difficulties that impede their growth as partners and helps them to explore marital issues in a safe and non-judgemental environment. Marriage therapy can also help both partners learn ways to recognize and verbalize each person’s needs and expectations and also involves both partners taking an active role in the therapy process.

Conflict Resolution
All couples struggle with conflict at some point in time in the relationship but not all couples know how to go about resolving those issues in a manner that strengthens the bond in the relationship. Allowing conflict to go unresolved indefinitely can lead to mistrust and feelings of resentment.
Strengthening Emotional Intimacy and Connectedness
Let our therapists provide you with tools on how to emotionally reconnect with your partner by learning how to recognize and express gratitude, showing interest in hobbies and current events that are important to your partner, and learning small things you can do to help your partner feel loved and valued.
Improve Communication Skills
Knowing how to communicate effectively and respectfully when you are distressed or angry can be very difficult. Let our therapists teach you how to listen actively and with intent, learn how to accept and provide feedback to and from your partner, and learn how to be more aware of nonverbal communication. Don’t wait until communication has stopped or has gotten divisive, call us to schedule an appointment with one of our therapists who can help.
